PRACTICES IN THE HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS (HEI’s):
IMPLICATIONS TO THEIR PERFORMANCE
HILARIO B. TABORDA
The study aimed to determine the faculty assessment of the human resource
management practices in Pangasinan State University and the implications to their performance.
It included looking into the personal and professional attributes of the respondents in terms of
age, sex, civil status, employment status, highest educational attainment, length of service and
area of specialization.
Based on the gathered data and with regards to the respondents’ personal and
professional attributes, the findings of this study are, to wit: The faculty in the nine component
campuses of the Pangasinan State University are predominantly female whose ages ranged
between 31 – 40 years old, married, with permanent status, holders of Master’s degree,
occupying the rank of Instructor and in the teaching service for 5 years and below.
On the extent of human resource management practices along the six areas of concern,
the findings revealed that all the areas considered are practiced by the administrators in the nine
component campuses of PSU. On the level of faculty performance along job satisfaction, the
findings revealed that there was a high level of job satisfaction among the faculty-respondents
in the nine component campuses.
On the other hand, on the level of faculty performance along faculty productivity, the
findings show that there was a very high level of faculty productivity. The findings reveal that
innovativeness of the employees is significantly related to the length of teaching service, further,
employees’ value for work is significantly related to their academic rank. There are significant
relationships between the HRM practices and the level of performance.
The following recommendations drawn from the study would serve as blueprints for
HR managers in the implementation of HRM practices: since majority of the University faculty
are Instructors, they should be provided with ways and means to attain higher academic rank.
The administrators of the university should exert effort in encouraging the faculty to remain in
the university especially that most of them have rendered 5 years and below teaching service.
Human resource management guidelines for effectiveness are highly recommended. The
guidelines shall indicate specific practices that should be focused on every human resource
management component and are to be applied appropriately to the entire university. University
officials should formulate an Enhancement Program for Human Resource Management to further
strengthen the implementation of human resource management practices in the university and
to effect higher level of performance among the workforce.
