Know Your Leader - Andrew Munk
VP, Corporate Controller, Finance - Global Accounting Operations
What is most important to you and your organization – mission, vision, or
core values?
All of these come together in who we are as part of VMware. When I think about
the execution of core values what comes to my mind is a sense of community and the respect for other
individuals. The mission of the Corporate Controller Organization is to enable VMware’s growth by developing
and implementing processes that are scalable, efficient and compliant. It is also about managing processes
that deliver accurate and timely financial information and most importantly modeling EPIC2 values in our work
and creating a dynamic learning environment that develops future leaders.
How do you inspire your team to drive your vision?
Basically, it comes down to manager style and there are certain things that are very important to me. I believe
that people need to feel comfortable in their workspace in order to do their best work. When employees feel
comfortable, they are willing to share their views and are willing to try new things. Providing this environment
and encouraging the team is key.
In the midst of craziness and conflict how do you keep your eyes on the prize, how do you keep your
focus on?
It really comes back to the communication dimension. I am a firm believer in staying in contact with people
and keeping the conversation going. Sometimes as a leader we need to remind people of the priorities. Also
it’s important to communicate with my leadership to make sure that I am focusing on those things that are
important to them and the organization. I think the eye on the prize is critical, but communication is also
important.
Why do you do what you do now and what is it that inspires you to do it?
I feel that I can make a difference at VMware; whether it is building better process or working together with the
team or executing a process to deliver an annual report, it is all motivating and energizing. What keeps me
coming back? I would say, the people at VMware. It’s that special culture here which is refreshing and I adore
my team that I support who are an incredible group with so many different talents. When you are working
together in that environment you feel that you are able to contribute and to make a difference—it is a great
feeling!
Have you had a calling that is greater than you and what is it like?
If I have to identify something that is bigger than me, it is the perspective of recognizing and leaving a legacy
and helping others along. I am a huge proponent of a nurturing culture where you can share your experience
to help somebody else. When you are experiencing a lot of different things and want to feel better about
yourself, go do something to help somebody else. I want to be remembered as a person who offered
perspective and as a person who is willing to give ear and listen.
