IMAGERY: PAINTING WITH WORDS
METAPHOR AND SIMILE
PERSONIFICATION AND
ANTHROPOMORPHISM
“Hope” is the thing with feathers-
That perches in the soul-
And sings the tune without the words-
And never stops - at all -
- Emily Dickinson (an excerpt)
I’ve always wanted to be an actress. While studying acting at university, I
applied to many theaters for acting jobs. They all turned me down. But I kept the
above excerpt from a poem by Emily Dickinson in mind. Her words gave me hope.
One day, while I was sitting in the park, a man who I didn’t know stopped to
talk with me. Talking to strangers is something I generally didn’t do, but in this
case I made an exception since he seemed friendly and genuinely interested in me.
It turned out to be one of the best things I’d ever done.
