What can we do?
IDEAS
Organising a clean-up Day of Action can be a great way of being visible in the community, socialising and enjoying the outdoors. You can
contact Keep Wales Tidy for help with activities during the school year and visit the website for handy hints on how to plan and promote your
day keepwalestidy.cymru/betidy. Remember to make yourself seen, make some banners and write an article in the school newsletter.
Carry out a litter count to find how much and what type of litter is in the school grounds and surrounding area. Create data charts and discuss
where the litter may have come from. Where are the litter hotspots at school and in the community? Create maps, pictures or videos of your
school grounds, surrounding streets and the local park or beach to raise awareness of the issues.
Investigate the impact of litter on our environment and for our wildlife. Think about the streets, the countryside, beaches, rivers and seas. Also
think about items that are released into the air.
Investigate the financial cost of litter and waste collection in your school. How could it be reduced?
Does everybody know where the bins are within your school building and in the school yard? Ask pupils to design new signs for the litter bins
and introduce a competition for the best design.
Devise a questionnaire asking why people litter and what would stop them. Get everybody in your school to complete the questionnaire and
task pupils to take it home to ask relatives and friends. What have you found out? Can you make any improvements at school?
