Anansine’s Funeral
Anansine’s husband, Arman, was heartbroken.
The crowd parted, eyes stuck on the wooden
trunk of the tree, as he silently retreated to his
room below the hospital. Everyone, young and
old returned to their homes, the gloom of the day
now riding on their shoulders.
The news quickly spread all over the forest and to
neighbouring Caribbean islands. Later that day,
Anansine's body was sent to the funeral home to
be preserved in a bottle of Sunset rum.
Anansine was a Spiritual Baptist and so, on the
third and ninth night after she had died, they had
a wake. All the villagers came out to celebrate the
life of Anansine. On one of those nights,
Anansine’s sister overheard Mr Manicou
gossiping with Lady Gouti.
“Ah how come only now she dead? She bin
pregnant before and only now she dead. And yo
know one time she bin lay three hundred eggs!”
Mr Manicou said.
