UNIT 2
MODULE 3: ATOMIC AND NUCLEAR PHYSICS
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
On completion of this Module, students should:
1. appreciate the photon model for electromagnetic radiation;
2. understand the development of the nuclear model of the atom;
3. appreciate the wave-particle nature of matter and energy;
4. understand the relationship between mass and energy;
5. demonstrate a knowledge of radioactivity and its applications; and,
6. apply the laws of Physics to solve appropriate problems.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES EXPLANATORY NOTES SUGGESTED PRACTICAL
ACTIVITIES
1. Particulate Nature of Electromagnetic Radiation
Students should be able to:
1.1. describe the phenomenon of A description of what Measuring current and or
photoelectric emission; happens when uv radiation change in resistance in
falls on a zinc plate, or light devices exposed to light
on materials such as such as photocells.
cadmium sulfide and
photovoltaic cells.
1.2. use the relationship E = h f to
solve problems;
1.3. discuss the shortcomings of Mention effect of high and
classical physics to explain low intensity below and
aspects of the photoelectric above the cutoff frequency.
effect;
1.4. explain how the photon Explanation of the
theory better suits the photoelectric effect as
emission of a photon; evidence for the particulate
nature of electromagnetic
radiation.
