Ash Everywhere
The girls hugged each other tightly in the back
seat while their mother tried to get them to
safety. The traffic was backed up and moving very
slowly as everyone was trying to get away from
the area at once. People were blowing their horns
and shouting at each other to get out of the way.
Finally, they were across Belham and away from
the danger zone. Then they headed for the
master checkpoint in Salem, so that they could be
assigned a shelter. On the car radio they heard
Dr Fenton asking everyone to remain calm.
A few hours later Dr Fenton was on the radio
again. She announced that while many people
had been rescued in Plymouth, sadly, some had
been killed in the eruption!
She told us that the pyroclastic flow was far
greater than any seen before and that many
houses and buildings had been destroyed.
