The reduction in the wholesale cost of coffee and sugar
has resulted in a decrease of Rs. 15000/- and R3. 6000/- respective
ly in Customs collections, The import of sugar is similar to
that of the previous year in suite of the increased vigilance
of the Persian authorities. Local exports to Persian ports do
not seem to hove been affected e3 much as would have been expected.
Similar reductions in the wholesale price of grain and tea have
reflected on the Customs collections and caused a decrease of about
25fs from the prevtdoSyear.
Native Craft shows a satisfactory increase of Rs. 10,920/-
mninly due to the import of ghee by native craft instead of by
steamers.
Parcel duties shows a decrease od almost Rs. 6000/- due
to the decrease in importation of luxuries.
Passenger Baggege shows a decrease of nearly Rs. 15000/-
owing to the fact that carpets and abbas are now worth about 40it
less than they were last year. The fall in the price of carpets^*
presumably owing to the general trade depression, carpets being a
luxury find no market when money is tight.
The decreese of Rs. IOOCO/- in transhipment duty is mainly
due to the recent war on the mainland which affected trade very
seriously.
Miscellaneous includes P.s. 3000/- being sale proceeds of
unclaimed cargo as well as the Harbour Sue of Rs. 10/- imposed on
every motor passenger launch which is not registered in Bahrain
and which enters the port.
Other Revenue Collected Bv Customs.
Vehicle Licenses. The inport of cars, mainly Fords, is steadilj
increasing.
Pearling Licenses.
The decrease of Rs. 58G0/- is due directly to the bad
pecrl season. Many persons who took their boats out during the
previous secson are now unable to ecuip them.
