The Omani Manuscript Collection at Muscat 169
The work belongs to the late 5th/11th century. Cf. Wilkinson,
‘Background’, AS, III, 157. The Bayan is also known in North Africa.
Cf. Schacht, ‘Manuscrits’, RA, 382, item 22, with the information that
Kindi died about 508/1114. Apart from its legal interest, the work also
contains biographical material. Cf. e.g. SalimI, Tufrfat, I, 114.
V.103. Muhammad b. Ja‘far al-lzkawl, Jami‘ Ibn Ja'far fi ’1-abkam, Vol. 1,
date of copying 1056 (1646). [100]
V.104. Ibid. Complete? copied 1216 (1801). [1216]
The author and his Jami* arc discussed at some length in Wilkinson,
AS, III, 150. The work is known in North Africa, cf. Schacht, RA, 381,
item 17. Schacht concludes that the Jami‘ must be earlier than the
6th/12th century and states that it was introduced into North Africa
from Oman in the 7th/13th century (note 9). Cf. also IdarithI, (Uqud,
277. TanukhI, in his edition of the ‘Iqd, 20, lists him as a scholar of the
4th/10th century. (J. C. W.—I would now place this work at the end of
the 3rd/9th century; at least the author’s floruit was at that time.)
V.105. Abu ’1-Hasan ‘All b. Muhammad, Jami‘ Abl 'I-Hasan al-Bisyanl/al-

V.106. Ibid, copied 1248 (1832). [283]
Ennami, ‘Description’, JSS, XV, 78, includes him and his Sirah, though
he gives no date. Wilkinson, AS, III, 151-2, discusses him at length and
says that he was still alive in the middle of the 4th/11th century. Cf.
also E. Sachau, ‘Muhammedanisches Erbrecht nach der Lehre der
ibaditischen Araber ...’ Sitzungsberichte K6n, Preus Akad, Wiss.,
Berlin, VIII, 1894. Cf. also tfarithl, ‘Uqud, 279 and TanukhI, edition of
the ‘Iqd, 20.
V.107. Abu Sa‘Id Muhammad b. Sa‘Id al-Kudaml, al-Jamii al-mufid min

V.108. Ibid, copied 1303 (1885). [1501]
V.109. Ibid, copied 1303 (1885). [1142]
Only the North African copy of this work was previously known, cf.
Schacht, 385, item 38—erroneously al-Kadaml. Cf. also Wilkinson, AS,
147-8, who concludes that he cannot be dated later than the middle of
the 5th/11th century.
V.110. Abu Muhammad ‘Abd Allah b. Muhammad b. Barakah, Jami' Abl
Muhammad. [560]
Cf. Schacht, 384, item 28. This work has been published in Cairo in
1971, edited by ‘IsS b. Yahya al-Barunl. Cf. T. Lewicki, ‘Ibn Barakah’ in
EP and Wilkinson, AS, 151-2. Ibn Barakah lived in the second half of
the 4 th/10th century.

V.l 13. Muhanna b. Khalfan al-Bu-Saldl, Lubab al-2thar. [1479]
Cf. Schacht, 386, item 40, who completes the title thus: ... al-waridah
‘an al-ashyakh al-muta’akhkhirin al-akhyZr, adding that he acquired a

information on the author. (J.C.W.—The following points might be
