Hammurabi’s code, carved on a col
umn seven feet tall and three feet
around at the base, stood for six cen
turies in Babylon and was carried off
to Susa in 1165 b.c. by the Elamite
conqueror Shutruk-Nahhunte. The
top of the column, illustrated here,
shows Hammurabi standing before
the enthroned sun-god, whose multi
horned headdress resembles a turban.
