          Hammurabi’s code, carved on a col­
          umn seven feet tall and three feet
          around at the base, stood for six cen­
           turies in Babylon and was carried off
           to Susa in 1165 b.c. by the Elamite
           conqueror Shutruk-Nahhunte. The
           top of the column, illustrated here,
           shows Hammurabi standing before
           the enthroned sun-god, whose multi­
           horned headdress resembles a turban.
