The ziggurat of Ur still stands, thirty years after Sir Leonard Woolley excavated it, as
the most imposing of the monuments of that city. Built a hundred years before the Sec
ond Millennium b.c. began, it must have towered above Abraham’s city, an artificial
mountain with its temple on the summit, and its terraces, it is believed, clothed with
bushes and trees.
