accentuate tribal rivalries which it was an aim of Islam to eliminate.
A third is that it is quite possible that in prc-Islamic times any form
of casting lots may have been accompanied by the invocation of
pagan deities, as was certainly the case when thzazlam, which figure
as objects of censure along with maysir in surah v, were used for
divination; though I have to admit that this third suggestion makes it
somewhat difficult to explain why, in the following verse, ‘wine and
maysir' are particularly singled out as causing enmity and hatred.
