Telephone Department.—The existing telephone system was replaced by a fully automatic
system installed and operated by Messrs. Cable & Wireless, Limited.
Shaikh Mamed Bridge.—Maintenance and operation of the bridge continued satisfactorily and
the toll charges were again let out on contract for the coming year.
Workshops Department.—This Department continued to carry out new work and repairs for
all sections of the Government. The steelwork used on the Power Station Extension was fabricated in
the Workshops. Work carried out for Government Departments produced a revenue of Rs. 16,000, while
private jobs produced Rs. 15,000.
Transport Department.—The repair and servicing of all Government vehicles was maintained.
Eleven new vehicles were purchased and four vehicles were written off. The total number of vehicles
in service at the year-end was 60.
Distillation Plant.—The sale of water to the public was discontinued and the output of the
pbnt was confined to the Power Station.
Manama Water Scheme.—The Water Pumping Station continued working satisfactorily.
The average daily consumption was 418,000 gallons, while the peak daily consumption was 885,000 gallons
recorded on the 15th Ramadan. The consumption during the year was 150,496,000 gallons. No undue
variation of the borehole satic-hcad was noted during this period.
Staff.—Mr. J. Hudson was appointed Assistant State Engineer, and commenced duty with the
Department on the 4th Jamad-Thani.
