ELECTRICITY UNDERTAKING
Power Station.—Work was commenced on the extension of the Power Station building to almost
twice its present size and the erection of No. 6 300 kW. Generating Set was completed. This set was
put into commission by II.II. Shaikh Salman Bin Hamad Al-Khalifuh, K.C.I.E., on the 17th Jamad-
Thani. Concrete beds for the installation of No. 7 and No. 8 sets (350 kW.) were completed and the
erection of the engines of these sets was commenced. The construction of a large Water-cooling Tower
and Pond was completed in Ramadhan. At the close of the year the total installed capacity of the Station
was 1,100 kW.
Mains Department, —Repair and maintenance of existing cables and lines was continued
throughout the year and improvements were effected to the supply voltage in certain areas of the distribution
network. The H.T. over-head line along the Causeway to Muharraq was replaced by an underground
cable.
Meter Department.—The new Meter-testing room was completed and commenced operations
under the direction of a well-qualified foreman.
General.—Units generated during the year amounted to 2,021,192 and the Peak Load carried
620 kilowatts. 141 new consumers were connected, bringing the total number of consumers to 2,238 at
the year-end. Additional load connected amounted to 213.35 kW. and the total connected load is now
1,730 kW. The supply of electricity has been maintained, without any major interruption, throughout
the year and improvements have been effected. Mains losses being reduced by 5 per cent on the previous
year. The cost per unit to consumers was reduced considerably at the year-end and all types of supply
are now provided at the following rates :—
For the first 50 units per month 4 annas per unit.
For the next 200 units per month •• 3
For all over 250 units per month 2
Wiring, Sales and Service Department.—Electrical installations for the following premises
were carried out during the year :—
Electricity Department’s Meter Testing Room and Water Distillation Plant.
New Sisters’ House, Government Hospital.
New Private Wards, Government Hospital.
New Government Offices.
Manama Water Pumping Station.
Three Shops, Barrett Road.
New Customs Sheds.
Extensions to Schools.
Future Development.—The Power Station building is being extended to almost twice its present
size and the erection of two 350 kW. generators is proceeding. A further generator of 850 kW. is expected
shortly, together with a complete up-to-date switch-board, and by the summer of 1950 the station will
be capable of an output of 2,400 kW. In order to deliver this output to consumers, a new system of
transmission, distribution and new sub-stations is to be installed in and around Manama and Muharraq.
Materials for this arc now arriving and the work will be started very shortly.
Until this new system is completed, the Department will continue to connect new consumers and
extra load in rotation as to the date of application, on the existing lines, but some delay must be expected
in districts where these lines are already over-loaded.
Under the new tariff only one meter will be required in each consumer’s premises and redundant
meters will be removed as soon as possible.
