The question of re-excavation was first brought up in 1970, on the occasion of the Third
International Conference on ٨sian Archacology organived by the Bahrain Government. It
wa5 thcn decided to uncover sclccted areas of the tcmple in order to display some fcatures of
the monument.
I 1983, finally, on behalf of the Bahrain Government, the Prehistoric Museun,
rcprcscntcd by thc author as one of the former cxcavators, was able to assist the Department
of Antiquities of Bahrain with a much more cxtensive re-cxcavation.
This re-excavation (Fig. 1) took place March-May 1983 and the work could now be
based on an extcnsive re-study (since 1980) of the former excavations with a view to
publication. As the stratigraphy and architecture of the temple had been fully worked out in
that connection, we had at our disposal a body of mateiral which was well adapted to plan a
systematic re-excavation. On this background it appears sensible to limit the new excavation
to an cxposition of so-called Temple 11 (Fig. 2). Accordingly, a proposal was presented to
Shaikha Haya A١-Khalifa and Mr. Michael Rice, London, dealing with this plan.
