                                                   El-Deroo.
                            Originally a Bedouin tribe, but now a large portion of them is
                        settled at Tenaain and other villages in El-Dhdhireh. The Bedouins of
                        the tribe are pastoral, and rear large number of camels which they
                       pasture in the oases of the great desert. They are a wild and predatory
                        race, and no rising of the eastern tribes takes place without the Deroo
                        taking a prominent share therein. The following arc the sub-divisions
                        into which they arc divided:—

                             The localities occupied by this tribe are the Wddy-beni-Gbdfir
                         Baldd, El-'Aridh, El-Dereez, El-Ghabbi, &c. It is of 'Adndoi descent,
                         mid immigrated into 'Omdn from Nejd. The section of this tribe
                         the Wddy Rostak is said to be taller and fairer than the rest and than
                         the other Arabs around them. The Beni Ghdfir have a reputation for
                         valour and skill in war, and their pugnacious propensities may be jn
                         from the fact that they are at feud with eight other tribes.   ^
                         has given its name to one of the two great political factions in 'O®.'
                         but it does not at present hold any dominant influence in that fac 0
                         over the other tribes composing it. And it does not appear that it eve
                         did so, for it was owing to the pre-eminent talent and energy 1

                         the then leader Mohammed-bin-Ndsir, not to the superiority iu   :g
                         the tribe that its name so renowned. The Shaikh of the Beni Gb&nr
                         also the "Temeemeh” of all the GhafRree tribes. His name
                         ghash-bin-Hameyd-bin-Rdshid, El-Atabee, and the tribe to wbicn
                         properly belongs is almost extinct; he resides at Babld, and is *
                         some character and iufluence.
