these offices was passed to the State Post Office for distribution. Ord
inary internal letters were postmarked only at Kuwait and Alimadi Post

RegistereD A
Type 38 Type 39
Two cancellers were used at Safat Post Office from February 1st;
Type 38 (inscribed “KUWAIT’ only, and often with “AM” or “PM”
incorporated above the date) was used to postmark ordinary internal
mail, and was occasionally used inadvertantly to cancel British Agency
stamps on ordinary external mail. Type 39 was used on registered
internal and external mail, and was soon replaced with other rubber
cancellers with a lower case “d” in “RegistereD”. These latter cancel
lers rapidly lost their figures and by August had become enlarged and
mis-shapen, one assuming the outline shape of a lemon. They were
again replaced later in 1958 by rubber cancellers similar to Type 39 but
with smaller serifed letters and struck in black or purple; and it is this
cancellation which is usually found on the British Agency 15 NP
(Type II).
During the course of 1958, the State Postal Service opened six
sub-offices. Two (Sharq, April 5th and Mirgab, July 19th) served
districts within Kuwait Town; two (Salmiya, May 24th and Hawalli,
July 19th) were in growing suburbs: one (Fahaheel, July 19th) was in
a small village north of Mena al Ahmadi, and the last was at the Airport
(November 24th).
