Mr. Richard O’Donnell
Recruitment Manager
Koff & Associates
2835 Seventh Street
Berkeley, CA 94710
RE: City of San José Assistant Director of Finance – Application
Dear Mr. O’Donnell:
Thank you for considering my application for the Assistant Director of Finance position in the City of San José (City),
as seen on the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Employment Ads website. Following you will find
my résumé and five (5) professional references, as directed on your website. After reviewing the GFOA advertisement,
the Koff & Associates recruitment brochure, and various other budgetary and financial documents on the City website,
I believe I have the experience and background that meets the ideal candidate criteria as defined for this position.
As you will notice from my résumé, I have an employment gap that I should explain. In mid-2017, I experienced a
personal challenge that, while I continued to work for over a year, led to the difficult decision to go on sabbatical in July
2018. While this sabbatical has allowed me to contribute my services to various organizations, I am ready to return to
full-time work with a sense of purpose that I look forward to channeling into my next position.
As my résumé demonstrates, I am a seasoned manager, with over 25 years’ experience directing day-to-day financial
operations in large, complex public and non-profit agencies. I recently completed (in June 2018) a successful, large-scale
enterprise resource planning system (ERP) reimplementation and upgrade, and am proficient in the Microsoft product
suite. I am experienced in collaborating diplomatically with internal and external stakeholders at all levels to achieve
mutually beneficial, desirable outcomes for significant issues and challenging concerns. Last but not least, I strive to
provide a work environment where the Finance Department is demonstrably supportive of those who depend upon its
services, and where finance staff are challenged yet motivated to succeed.
I look forward to hearing from you and may be reached via the contact information above. Thank you for your time.
Respectfully,
Luz Cofresí-Howe
