Re: Automated Services Bureau Manager
I am writing to you to express my interest in the Automated Services Bureau Manager position.
I received my MS in Library Science from the University of North Texas. While studying at UNT, I
completed courses in web design, information systems, collection development, cataloging,
telecommunications, metadata, and digital collections. I took on many leadership roles while studying at
UNT. I was Vice President, then President of the Library and Information Studies Student Association
(LISSA). As the leader of LISSA, I helped coordinated library tours, resume workshops, and mock
interviews.
I worked as a technical services paraprofessional for 10 years, moving steadily through the various
departments: cataloging, collection development, interlibrary loan, systems, and acquisitions. During
these years, I learned how all these areas intersect to create one cohesive machine. I currently
supervise a small technical services department with three staff members, but I also oversee IT/Systems
related projects.
Though I have been working in technical services for many years, my first experience in the library was
working with the public, first as a clerk, then a library assistant, and finally a librarian. I have always
enjoyed working with people of all ages and assisting people of diverse backgrounds and feel that good
customer service skills are extremely valuable regardless of whether your position deals directly with the
public or is 100% behind the scenes.
I am naturally drawn to leadership. I have often been referred to as the “go to person” because I make
a point of learning all areas of the job, even those that are not my personal tasks. I am a “big picture”
person, but also enjoy getting into the details. I am an excellent communicator, always striving to
exercise good judgement and follow best practices. I work well in both independent and team settings
and welcome any challenge placed before me in this ever-changing world of public libraries.
On a personal note, I was born and raised in Orange County, but have lived in the city of Long Beach for
over 19 years. I am a proud technology geek. I have worked with computers since my early teens and
continue to tinker with all types of technology in my spare time. My non-technology pursuits include
drawing, knitting, sewing, reading, and spending time with my dog, Zelda.
I feel that my extensive and varied experience combined with my can-do character make me an
excellent candidate for this position. I thank you for your consideration and look forward to hearing
from you.
Sincerely,
Ann M. Duarte
