To Ms. Glenda Williams, Director of Library Services, and the Hiring Committee:
I am a trained librarian and project coordinator with nine years of professional experience in public,
academic, and museum libraries and archives, as well as five years participating in technology
initiatives in the private sector. I would like to be considered for the role of Manager of Automated
Services with the Long Beach Public Library (LBPL).
I currently serve as Senior Librarian in LBPL’s Automated Services Bureau, overseeing department
operations, supervising staff, and collaborating with library leaders to set priorities and manage
projects. I perform a mélange of jobs, which include: responding to patron emails; delivering staff
training workshops; participating in the fiscal administration of our materials budget; configuring our
library systems and user permissions; handling vendor communication and contract negotiations;
responding to internal staff inquiries for support – Prioritization, self-initiative, and time-management
are integral to my role.
Over the course of my career I have successfully launched and supported several large-scale
technology projects. At the Mattress Factory Museum Archives I provided support through a major
catalog migration, performing authority control and updating records to ensure data integrity. While
at CSUN I participated in the implementation of a Unified Library Management System, working
collaboratively to transition 23 campus libraries onto one system for ultimate resource sharing. While
at Avectous I oversaw a portfolio of clients designing custom software packages. These experiences
have afforded me opportunities to hone my project management skills; learn process development +
documentation; oversee large-scale contracts, budgets, technology implementations, and software
configurations; and establish high standards for delivering customer service and technical support.
During my time with LBPL I have developed an understanding of our systems, including: Sierra,
Encore, iTiva telephone renewals, LBPL Mobile App, LBPL Website, ASB Ticketing System, along with
all public resources offered in the LBPL Digital Library and their authentication methods. I have
successfully modified Sierra configurations to support library projects by: introducing new item types
and circulation rules to support STEAM MaKits; transitioning to floating media collections to improve
patron access and balance budget requirements; adjusting holds logic for improved efficiency during
Main’s book move; and introducing new data tags to collect gift material statistics. I have
collaborated with our vendors and City Data Center to update Sierra and Encore operating systems
and applications to resolve bugs and bring LBPL up to speed. I have established myself as an
adaptive leader with an aptitude for translating technical jargon to reach a variety of stakeholders,
