Oversee all aspects of the department, responsible for budget, hiring of senior management, and
strategic planning for the Administrative, Animal Care, Building, Code Enforcement, and Planning
Divisions. Create an organizational culture that supports effective and collaborative relationships
among City staff, outside agencies, customers, members of the public, and policy makers.
Advise the City Manager, Assistant City Managers, and elected officials on matters pertaining to
community development. Build and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow department
heads and lead interdepartmental initiatives to successfully improve customer service and resolve
problems. Develop a culture of inclusion and staff empowerment.
PLANNING DIRECTOR DECEMBER 2017 – DECEMBER 2019

Lead the Planning Division, responsible for budget, hiring and disciplinary decisions, and assigning
work to managers in the Current Planning, Long Range Planning, Environmental Planning, Urban
Design, New Growth and Annexation, and Zoning Administration sections. Stimulate economic
development with an appropriate policy and regulatory environment and outstanding customer
service. Oversee major projects including the general plan update, climate action plan, housing
policy updates to facilitate increased production, Arena Re-Use Project, and neighborhood plans in
conjunction with the interdisciplinary Neighborhood Development Action Team. Oversee building
permit reviews to ensure compliance with planning requirements and provide direction on code
enforcement cases involving zoning violations. Represent the Community Development Director
before City Council, Planning Commission, and civic organizations.
Develop staff capacity through training, succession planning, and leadership opportunities. Assist
in developing fiscal sustainability strategies for the division and department. Participate in
Development Process Improvement Team to identify efficiencies and eliminate obstacles in the
development permitting process.
