Had been a City Manager. Have also been a Public Works Director over 1,200 employees for the
third largest county in the State of Georgia. I also have private sector consulting experience.
Within my private sector background I have a management consulting background. Brown and
Caldwell - I was in there management consulting practice. Not only was I in a client management
and sales role but I was also billable in their consulting practice. I was part of a team that would go
to Cincinnati. Another one was the City of Chattanooga. Looking at their organizations and making
recommendations on how to become better organized to perform better. I am also a retired
Kernel in the Marine Corp. reserves.
1. What drives you to seek this position? Tell me a bit about what you know about the City and the
fit you see with your interests.
I really love the challenge of leading a large organization - it comes from military background
where I've been a commander in the reserves. Seeking improvement and driving for success. I
have a passion for that I get a passion of seeing large organizations perform well. I love improving
the careers of other people. I just have a passion of seeking self improvement of the team. My
wife is from San Diego. She's always had an interest in going back. We actually met in Orange
County. When you talk about the Ideal Candidate - everything that's stated there I've done. It
seems like a decent fit. As far as striving for process improvement. It talked about striving to make
the organization better. As an Assistant City Manager I have dealt with politicians and
collaborations with multiple cities like, adjacent counties, developing great relationships with
organizations around me.
2. Please describe your most recent position and day-to-day responsibilities.
Right now doing some consulting. Recently left the City of Sandy Springs where I was the
Assistant City Manager for Infrastructure - transportation, fleet management, they were
in the process of acquiring the water system. The City of Sandy Springs was incorporated
in 2005 - it was formerly part of the City of Atlanta. When the City was incorporated - the
water system was owned and operated by the City of Atlanta. They were trying to take
the water system away from Atlanta. The pump stations and the elevated towers and
either condemn the system or takeover operations.
RFL: There were some differences between myself and the City Manager.
3. How many employees do you supervise? Who do you report to?
Oversaw 65 people. Oversaw Public Works, fleet, emergency response and preparedness.
Reported to the City Manager. There was an icestorm. For about four years I did work
with FEMA. I have a disaster relief background also.
4. Please describe your experience in public sector executive management and leadership.
I love the experience. The first time was when I was a Public Works Director - I had about 100
employees and four to five divisions. Fleet, storm water, I had transportation. Sanitation, and I had
another group that was more like an environmental group that deals with land acquisition, they
