1. What drives you to seek this position or why are you open to this position.? Tell me a bit about
what you know about the City and the fit you see with your interests.
I know a little bit about the City of San Diego. I have numerous times vacationed and visited family
out West. I would like to relocate. In terms of the position. I am in process for our Director of
Public Works position. I'm not actively looking, but am actively listening. I see more than just
utilities here. We replaced two of our water plants.
2. Please describe your most recent position and day-to-day responsibilities.
I'm Acting Director of Public Works. We have 210 employees across multiple bureaus. We
have a solid waste and recycling program, fleet services, public parks, police stations, fire,
etc.. That all fall under the domain of public works.
3. How many employees do you supervise? Who do you report to?
210 employees that he supervises. 10 bureau managers that report to me.
4. Please describe your experience in public sector executive management and leadership.
I've been in senior management since 2007 when I joined the City. I came from a construction
background. I started with the City in 2007. I've managed the Capital Improvement Plan across all
capital improvement across water, wastewater. Did a lot of construction management, guiding a
lot of conceptual, capital and infrastructure investment plans, put pipes and pump stations into
service. After doing that for seven years I was promoted to Deputy Director - then my boss was
not getting along with the Mayor so they parted ways and that's where we're at right now. Was
appointed as Acting Director in October.
5. This position require department staff to work between multiple divisions of the City and
multiple City departments. How will you enable the organization to deliver a significantly better
customer experience, including clarity, timeliness, and responsiveness?
My degree and background is in operations. I currently have a lot of inter-department
relationships and have built many over my tenure here. I have great relationships with other
government entities. I feel like I can bring the ability to forge relationships and build process
improvement.
