Overall: Akin came across as poised and intelligent. He tended to over-analyze the questions,
which would send him down tangents with a narrow focus, often causing him not to answer
the greater question in its entirety. His professional experience is mired in lab work and
environmental compliance aspects of that space. While this perspective has synergy with
CASA, it seemed to limit the full-picture. There was limited mention of dealing with
Statewide regulatory bodies, politics, and other issues facing entities that are not strictly lab
focused.
"I currently run the environmental compliance programs for the City of Santa Cruz for my
day job, I also am the Chair for CCLEAN. I am going to focus on CCLEAN. What I do at
that level is coordinate budget, management, and responses to the Water Board -
including the maintenance of acceptable levels of chemicals and the effects on fish and
greater area within the northern regions of the center."
