                                            89.  THE   DAWN     (AL-FAJR)
                                      In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

                                  1  By the Dawn,  2  by the Ten livelihood, he says, ‘My Lord has

                                  Nights,  3  by the even and the disgraced me.’  No indeed, but
                                      4
                                  odd,  and by the passing night, you show no kindness to the orphan,
                                  5  is there not in this strong  18  nor do you urge one another to

                                  evidence for a man of sense? feed the poor,  and you greedily
                                  6  Have you not heard of how devour the inheritance of the weak,
                                  your Lord dealt with the tribe of  20  and you have a love of wealth
                                  ‘Ad,  7 the people of Iram, the which can never be satisfied.  No

                                  city of many pillars,  the like of indeed! When the earth is crushed

                                  which has never been created in and ground to dust,  when your

                                  the land,  and with the Thamud, Lord comes with the angels,
                                  who cut out [huge] rocks in the rank upon rank,  23  and Hell is
                                  valley,  10  and with Pharaoh of made to appear on that Day, then
                                  the stakes?  11  All of them man will be mindful, but what will

                                  committed excesses in their being mindful then avail him?  He
                                  lands,  12  and caused much will say, ‘Oh, would that I had
                                  corruption in them:  13 so your provided beforehand for my life!’
