2. Demonstrate through my consistent actions the characteristics of hard-
working, competent, engaged, collaborative
• Complete all of my job responsbilibities with a positive attitude, and
look for at least one way to improve any processes for which I’m
responsible every week if possible
• Find at least three opportunities to support my fellow team
members even if there’s no immediate payoff or return for me;
review my success weekly and identify any opportunities that I had
but didn’t follow through on for better outcomes next time
• Collaborate with others both within and outside my immediate
department to learn more about the workings of the organization
and help support its goals; try to find at least one such opportunity
every months (with the understanding that some parts of my
organization are more open to collaboration than others!)
3. Invest on my own in leadership knowledge to demonstrate my
commitment to eventually assuming a leadership role
• Join American Nursing Informatics Association and take advantage
of at least four of their publications and continuing education
offerings in the next twelve months; after I have proved myself as
an excellent staffer, sign up for my employer’s mentoring program
(with my manager’s approval)
• Identify and monitor management and leadership trends and
best practices, both inside and outside the nursing or healthcare
management profession by reading, listening to podcasts, and
monitoring online “thought leaders” every week, for a total of at
least three “best practices monitoring” activities per week
• Attend all management and leadership presentations at
conferences I can go to
This career action plan presents only a few of the strategies and tactics
you might use, but they can give you an idea of how goals, strategies, and
tactics work together to support progress toward your career targets.
Our sample career action plan is organized in a roughly outline format,
but yours coulld take any form that worked best for you. Depending on
your personal preferences, your action plan might be an outline of goals/
strategies/tactics, or a multicolored visual graphic of key goals with
arrows drawn to strategies and tactics. The idea is to create some sort of
document or graphic that establishes what you plan to accomplish, how,
and within what timeframe – in a format that’s enjoyable and easy for you
to work with.
