CREATING YOUR ACTION
PLAN
To create your action plan, you’ll want to start by asking yourself three
questions:
1. What are my goals?
2. What strategies will I use to reach my goals?
3. What tactics (action items) will I use to to carry out my strategies?
Once you’ve identified your potential goal(s), strategies, and tactics, you’ll
next fill in more details about the various elements of your action plan.
Here’s an example of how this would work:
Step 1: Identify your goals.
What do you need to accomplish to make progress toward your nursing
or healthcare management career goals over the next year? Consider the
following possible goals to get you started, and complete the statements to
reflect your personal circumstances:
Explore these three options _____________________________________
Develop an expertise in ________________________________________
Find out whether I want to be/do _________________________________
Try out these three new skills ____________________________________
Move to [a new location] and ____________________________________
Get a job doing _______________________________________________
Find out more about ___________________________________________
Increase my income by ________________________________________
Learn more about _______________________as a possible career choice
Other goals __________________________________________________
Keep in mind that exploring and gathering information about a career
question you may have is as valid a goal as deciding or acting. If you’re
exploring, your focus will be on documenting your findings, whether
personal preferences (I took a leadership position, how did that feel?) or
information (there are a total of 10 private-practice medical clinics in this
region that could use my cool new “on-call house calls” nursing service).
