JOB-SPECIFIC
CONSIDERATIONS
For some of us, having a flexible work schedule determines whether or
not we’ll even consider a job. For others, a solid benefits package is the
determining factor. As you consider the following criteria in terms of your
own preferences, keep in mind that most if not all of these items can be
negotiated as part of an employment package for jobs not in the public
sector (public sector jobs often have fairly established parameters that
can’t be negotiated).
Before you think about negotiating, however, you’ll want to determine
what’s most important to you, what’s “need to have” vs. “nice to have.” As
you consider the following aspects, rank them by priority and then your
top three “need to have” items. That way, you’ll be able to quickly identify
whether a specific job opportunity offers you “goodness of fit,” or can be
negotiated in that direction.
