Master of Science- Nursing, Infection Prevention and Control
N572PE- Collection and Interpretation of Surveillance Data
July 2016
Basic Information
My name is XXXXX and I am submitting documentation to be considered as prior learning assessment
for N572PE, Collection and Interpretation of Surveillance Data. It has been my pleasure learning at
American Sentinel University through the Infection Control Specialization. I am excited to be almost
complete with my Master of Science in Nursing degree and am hoping to attend the commencement
ceremony in June.
Educational Experience
My educational experience began in 1993 as a freshman at Southeast Missouri State University.
I graduated in December of 1996 with an Associate Degree in Nursing. In the fall of 1998, I again
enrolled at Southeast Missouri State University and after two semesters was awarded a Bachelor of
Science in Nursing (BSN) in May of 1999. Over the past 12 years, I flirted with the attempt to obtain a
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree. However, life commitments of a family including two small
children and two jobs hampered my efforts and I eventually gave up after completing only 12 hours
in 2004. But the seed for obtaining a MSN had been planted and a decade later will hopefully come
to fruition. I am excited to say that I have nearly completed my MSN with a specialization in Infection
Control!
Professional Experience
Professional experiences include medical-surgical bedside nursing for approximately five years. At
the time, I did not realize that those patient care assessment skills and daily tasks would be critical
in learning how to make infection prevention recommendations years later. I draw upon those early
nursing experiences frequently as I try to give realistic infection prevention and control guidance. I think
back to the experiences that I encountered almost twenty years ago and how they shaped me into an
Infection Preventionist.
During this time of working medical-surgical nursing, I returned to school for a BSN. The leadership/
management course introduced me to the world of public health where I would eventually spend five
years gaining experience with population based health and epidemiology. Upon completion of my BSN,
the local public health department where I interned for a semester, asked me to continue working there
one day a week on my days off from my full-time bedside nurse job. This PRN job opened my eyes to
my love of public health and an eventual full time job in 2001.
