c. Masonry
Brick masonry walls are provided as infills between the structural member sections and
as partition walls between the compartments. Masonry walls in the test facility are
constructed with non-modular burnt clay bricks of standard size (22 cm x 11 cm x 8 cm)
of class designation 3.5 MPa with 20 mm thick cement plaster in single coat with
cement mortar 1:6 is applied on walls.
Masonry enclosures are provided as fire protection to structural steel columns (Image
5). One brick thick (22 cm) wall is constructed as enclosure over full height of columns
for resistance against fire. 1:3
masonry mortar mix is applied
between brick layers.
d. Staircase
Access to higher floor level is
through steel chequered staircase
provided at the rear end of the
test facility. Each step consists of
fabricated 8mm thick steel plate
with length 1m and width 0.383m
provided in dog legged fashion Image 5: Masonry enclosures provided as fire protection to steel columns
with a landing surface of about
2.28m x 1.84m. Individual floor levels are connected through 23 such steps. Stainless
steel 304 grade members of 50mm diameter 16 gauge hollow pipes are welded and
provided as staircase railings.
e. Façade
The test facility developed at IITGN involves testing of different façade assemblies such
as ACP, MDF, etc. It also helps understand fire propagation mechanisms such as leap
frog effect, internal fire spread, etc. Specifications of various materials used for glass
façade testing assemblies are as follows:
