(c) Fire Behavior (Growth, Flashover and Decay)
The timeline of events depicting growth, flashover and decay within the test compartment having glass panels
as sole façade material subjected to internal fire spread is detailed below.
Timeline of events:
Bending of
aluminium frame
Event 1: Time 16:18:00: (-5 min)
Data acquisition is started and all thermocouples show ambient room temperatures.
Event 2: Time: 16:23:00: (0 min): Ignition
Image 33: Bent aluminium frame and spalling of masonry plaster near facade
Gasoline placed in a steel dish beneath the wooden crib is ignited.
Event 3: Time: 16:24:00: (1 min) Event 5: Time: 16:28:45: (5.75 min)
Flames from the wooden crib begin impinging the cement boards placed at roof level of ground floor. Smoke begins gushing out of the compartment. No Smoke begins penetrating through the junction of the masonry spandrel and glass panel. Fire propagates internally to first floor level due to premature
smoke obscuration is observed at first and second floor level. Maximum temperature at ground floor level is around 135°C, whereas at first and second floor failure of fire stops. Temperature at ground floor façade level is about 600°C. Fire spreads very rapidly from ground floor to first floor level as unrated fire
level it is around 25°C. stop material was provided at the junction.
Event 4: Time: 16:27:00: (4 min) Event 6: Time: 16:29:30: (6.5 min)
Glass panel break (within the installation) due to the restraining effect provided by masonry spandrel. Aluminium frame holding glass panels bends during Unlike other tests, glass panel did not come out in intact form. Also, glass panel experienced concave bending before being shattered, due to the
fire but the extent of bending is lesser compared to other tests due to constraints provided by masonry. Temperature within the compartment increase constraining effect of masonry spandrel. Breaking of glass panels enhance ventilation at the ground floor level, thereby increasing compartment
rapidly and reach about 625°C during breaking of glass panel. Cement boards are in intact form due to close spacing of bolts during fixing. temperature around 760°C.
Wooden crib placed at first floor level ignites. Flames reach the cement boards at roof level. Flames reach second floor level through failure of fire stop
provided in form of wooden planks at the junction of first and second floor level. Wooden crib placed at second floor level has not caught fire.
