THE MARCHETTI ST OR Y
The man behind Marchetti is Brisbane optometrist Michael Makras.
Michael had owned Optiko in Tattersall’s Arcade for nine years before Marchetti
Café came to life. Michael identifi ed a need for a café that not only served great
coff ee but also had style by the bucket load. The beautifully designed art deco
Tattersalls Arcade opened in 1929. It not only houses the exclusive Tattersalls
Club but also a number of unique fashion boutiques, tailors, jewellers, a hotel
gym and of course Australia’s best eye wear and eye care specialists - Optiko.
Michael designed Marchetti in a similarly art deco fashion. The vision was to cre-
ate an elegant, authentic, classic Italian café.
“In the city there’s a dire lack of super classic cafés, places that feel really estab-
lished. They’re the kind of places Italians and French do best. Cafés with lots of
marble and brass, where you can stand at the counter and have a coff ee.”
The name Marchetti references Michael’s favourite plane, the Savoia-Marchetti
sea plane, also from the 1920’s.
Michael has sourced the very best coff ee from Sydney roasters Allpress. He has
tracked down suppliers of the most authentic Italian pastries including the much
sought after sfogliatella!
There is a great deal of consideration and love in the details at Marchetti and we
know you’ll be proud to be a part of this vision.
Welcome to the House of Marchetti!
