WHAT IS APERITIV O?
Marchetti serves breakfast and lunch and offers aperitivo on Friday nights.
In Italy, many bars and restaurants will offer aperitivo from around 5pm to 9pm.
In it’s simplest form, aperitivo is the warm up to dinner: pre-dinner drinks and a
snack. Aperitivo can even be a great alternative to a formal dinner.
Certain beverages are seen as appropriate aperitivi. They’re thought to whet
the appetite and most contain Italy’s primary bitters; Campari and Aperol. Drinks
served at aperitivo are usually low in alcohol content and dry or bitter rather than
sweet. Drinks like Prosecco, vermouth, Campari or Aperol make for a perfecto
aperitivo.
Below are some of the classic cocktails that are served at aperitivo.
Aperol Spritz: Known as the perfect drink for social occasions, the Aperol
spritz is a mix of Prosecco, Aperol and soda water and garnished with a slice of
orange or an olive.
Americano: First served in the 1860s (and not to be confused with the coffee
by the same name), the Americano is a mix of Campari, vermouth and soda wa-
ter.
Negroni: The Negroni is equal parts Campari, vermouth and gin and is fin-
ished with an orange garnish.
Sbagliato Negroni: Instead of gin, this lighter version of the Negroni mixes
Prosecco with vermouth and Campari.
Bellini: Born at Harry’s Bar in Venice, the Bellini is a blend of Prosecco and
peach nectar.
