PROPRIETARY AND CONFIDENTIAL DRAFT 28/Feb/03

                   Theory of Operation
                   Chapter 3: Theory of Operation

The Area Alarm contains between one and six gas-specific Area Alarm
Modules that continuously display the remotely monitored gas line pressure or
vacuum of specific areas within the facility. They remotely monitor the
pipelines by using gas-specific transducers. The inputs from the transducers
are supervised for both open-circuit and short-circuit conditions.

The Area Alarm Modules are configured at the factory for the specific gas and
units of measure specified by the customer. The alarm setpoints for the Area
Alarm Modules are pre-set according to NFPA 99 standards.

The Local Alarm also monitors the source equipment, but it is not required if
every piece of source equipment has its own alarm indicator. The Local Alarm
may combine several input signals into one output that can be wired to the
Master Alarm so that the Master Alarm can monitor them.

The Master Alarm can be configured by using either the Web pages or its front
panel. The Area Alarm Modules can be configured only from their front
panels, and the Local Alarm inputs are hard-wired only.

During normal conditions, the following conditions are present:

                                   • Local Alarm’s LEDs are green.
                                   • Master Alarm’s LEDs are green, unless the input is not used; then the LED
                                     is off.
                                   • Master Alarm’s display scrolls “No Alarms” across the screen.

                                   • Area Alarm Modules’ Normal LEDs light.
                                   • Area Alarm Modules display the current pressure or vacuum reading.

During normal conditions, and when the Network Communications Board is
installed in the Area Alarm; the following conditions are logged into the
                                  Master Alarm event log:

                                   • Pressing the Test key on either the Master Alarm or the Area Alarm along
                                     with the test information.

                                   • Entering the Setup mode on either the Master Alarm or the Area Alarm.
                                   • Daily self-checks on both the Master Alarm and the Area Alarm.

During an alarm condition on the Local Alarm, the alarm sounds, and the
                                  corresponding red LED lights.
