MUSIC COURSES
Private Music Lessons (Ages will Vary) - Lessons in voice, flute, clarinet, all stringed
instruments including harp, piano, and some brass can be arranged and given at Quest. Times
are arranged individually. Instructors: Amy Barker (piano), Christopher Chelpka (cello), Della
Chelpka (voice), Miranda DeBretto (flute), Kathryn Harpainter (violin), Jim Howell (contemporary
guitar), Jooeyon Hwang (voice), Aliyah Powe (violin), David Rife (violin), Wynne Rife (violin),
Becky Thai (piano), and Marion Turner (cello)
Music in Motion (Ages 3-5) - Young children will build a solid musical foundation through
singing, moving, actively listening, and playing instruments. They'll experience many genres of
music including classical, folk, traditional, and international. Students will improve spatial
awareness, gross and fine motor skills, and cognitive function - all while enjoying a variety of fun,
musical activities. Instructor: Bonnie Taylor
Beginning Cello (Ages 3-Adult) – This course teaches the fundamentals of Cello Performance.
Concepts include instrument care, music reading, listening, first position fingering, and good tone
production. Students are required to practice a minimum of three times a week outside of class
and perform with the QUEST Cello Choir, an ensemble of all QUEST cello students, at the Fine
Arts Festival in May. Instructor: Christopher Chelpka
Beginning Violin (Ages 5 & up)- This course is available to students who have just started
violin or who have about 1 year of experience. This is designed to introduce students to the
fundamentals of violin, including note reading, rhythm, proper violin technique and love of
music. This course is taught by one to Tucson's best violin instructors. Daily practice is
expected, and incentives will be provided. Students will be required to perform as a group in
the Fine Arts Festival held in May 2016. Instructors: Kathryn Harpainter
Intermediate Cello (Ages 8 & Up) – This course builds on the fundamentals of cello
performance, introducing more complex bowing, new fingering positions, and vibrato.
Students will also learn to play with greater emotional depth. Students are required to practice
a minimum of three times and perform with the QUEST Cello Choir, an ensemble of all Quest
cello students, at the Fine Arts Festival in May. Instructor: Christopher Chelpka

ORFF Ensemble and Singing (1 -5 ) - Elementary kids will sing and begin to read music
while playing a variety of instruments such as glockenspiels, xylophones, bells, drums, claves,
maracas, cymbals, and dulcimers. They'll experience classical, folk, and sacred music. This
will be a great way to combine learning and praising God through music. Instructor: Bonnie
Taylor
Acoustic Contemporary Guitar 1 (Ages 8 & Up) – This course is designed to develop basic
music skills applied to the guitar. Students will learn to play melodies, develop rhythm ability,
recognize musical terms and symbols, as well as play guitar harmonies and learn songs.
Required Book: The Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1 Instructor: Jim Howell
Beginning Classical Guitar (Ages 8 & Up) - Classical guitar explores core techniques and
concepts of the instrument and takes you through a structured, progressive course of work.
