Abstract. Traffic accidents in Malaysia keep increasing each year involving car, motorcycle, van, and
others leading to fatality. In 2017, 533,875 total number of accidents involved, 6740 were fatality. One
of the main factors that can contribute to traffic accidents is by human factor (distracted driving).
Distracted driving refers to the loss of control while driving that are caused by doing any activities that
can be affected on driver’s attention not focusing on the road such as texting using a smartphone, eating
and others. The objectives of this study were to investigate the number of university students using
smartphone and driving, to identify the percentage of smartphone dependency, and to analyse the
percentage of using a smartphone while driving. A questionnaire used and distributed to all the
respondents among students UTHM. The total of 371 samples tested to achieve all the objectives of
this study. Based on the results obtained, 79.27% of female students had a higher percentage of
smartphone dependency than male students. They more dependent on their smartphone in daily life
compared to male students and caused them to feel uncomfortable when they do not have a
smartphone. For smartphone usage while driving, showed that 65.14% of the male had a higher
percentage in smartphone usage while driving. They confidently used their smartphone. There was a
positive relationship between gender, age and driving with smartphone dependency and smartphone
usage while driving. One possible solution to overcome this problem was by conducting a program like
motivational talk, exhibition and others to raise the awareness among road user as in Malaysia the
enforcement of the law for the smartphone usage has been issued. The study concluded that all the
objectives reached the expectation of this study; UTHM students were depending on their smartphone
and they used their smartphone while driving.

               Keywords: smartphone, driving, dependency, accident.

Abstract. Information technology development has opened a new chapter in human relations and
brought about changes within organizations. In line with this rapid development, various mediums can
be used to provide information on subject matter. However, in this country, this technology is still
unpopular and is not widely-used in education e.g., admission to examination halls in institutions of
higher learning, such as Polytechnics. This causes delays in exam travel; especially with the use of
large halls, as it takes a long time for students who do not know their seating position to be seated. This
innovation study discusses the use and benefits of QR (Quick Response) code technology as a
validation for student seating position before sitting for an exam. An Android application uses QR codes
when students enter the exam hall. This innovation will speed-up the verification process and makes it
easier for students to identify their seats, as well as for exam officer monitoring purposes for the number
               of students attending.
