Wine Clubs

ine clubs are about more than discounts
and release tasting events. For many,
their club offers essential social connec-
Wtion. Friendships are forged with fellow
members and tasting room folks as well. Wineries enjoy
the privilege of becoming part of members’ stories—their
joys, their sorrows. In this season of pandemic, the caring
between wineries and club members is heartwarming and
goes both ways.
ABACELA WINERY
Gavin Joll, general manager at Abacela Winery, says peo-
ple “get it” during this Covid-19 season and are remaining
loyal. As our region opens up, local club members stop by
for socially distanced outdoor tastings, grateful to get out
once more. Besides tastings, they enjoy events such as wine
and pizza on Fridays. Or, the annual 100-mile wine club
dinner (using ingredients sourced within 100 miles) hosted
this summer, where one couple celebrated their 63rd anni-
versary and another their 28th. Club members are spread
across the country and many call, curious how things are
going in Oregon; then they place an order for their personal
wine cellars. Folks at the winery are grateful to see locals
and to connect with those far away.
Like everyone, Abacela had to shift gears due to Covid-19.
They normally host an annual summer Fiesta. This year’s
event was to be even grander, a celebration of their 25th
anniversary. Sadly, they had to cancel. Downscaled events
are being planned for later in the year, some spread over sev-
eral weekends. In appreciation for their loyalty, club mem-
bers will be treated to special perks during pick up periods.
