1. Previewing
To read more effectively and quickly, previewing the titles, section headings, key terms, or
photo captions is one of the strategies to help the readers get a sense of the structure and content
of a reading selection.
2. Predicting
Predicting is the process of expecting what will happen in the future by using the
knowledge of a predictor. For reading, predicting is one of the strategies that may help the reader
understand and expect about content and comprehension of selected reading by knowing the
subject matter. Readers can predict discourse structure by knowing the text type and purpose of
the article. Even the information about the author can predict the writing style and vocabulary of
selected reading.
3. Skimming and Scanning
Skimming and Scanning are techniques that increase reading more quickly and effectively
by using a quick survey of the text and keywords to get the main idea and gather the information
for concepts of the subject (For example, who, what, where, when, why and how).
4. Guessing from context
Using prior knowledge of the subject and the ideas in the text as clues to the meanings of
unknown words is better than stopping reading to look them up in a dictionary. Stopping makes
the reader read slower than usual and not get effective reading.
Effective reading comprehension involves 5 different abilities. The first ability is to
understand the main ideas of paragraphs. Then you need to understand the meaning of keywords
in the context and understand the references. You also need to select important details. Finally,
you need to make inferences and draw conclusions.
5. Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing of concepts or theories is needed for writing a summary after reading in
your own words.
To be able to read critically, you need to have a clear purpose. The purpose to have a
clearly defined purpose is to grasp a certain message, find important details, answer a specific
question, evaluate what you are reading, and be entertained by what you are reading.
