It’s cold outside, and they realize they can’t find a bus. Morgan jokes around, running in
circles to keep warm, and after 40 minutes they find out that buses had stopped running
thatlate.Theyend up taking a taxi,spending the lastofAlex’semergency money.Itcosts
Morgan feels defeated, “I thought today was going to be a magical day, and we ended up
crying over $30.”
Day 26
The next morning they both go to work, exhausted but trying to make enough money to
survive.
Day 29
O" to the hospital to get the bill for Alex’s hospital visit. It’s more than $400, and they’re
both worried about how they are going to pay it o". “I can’t imagine how people pay this
stu" o",” she says. “Me, my bill, just to walk in the door was $551,” he says, “This is just
some bullshit. It makes no sense.” They’re now more than $800 short on their bills, rent
and everything else that has come up. “You’re living on the edge of a knife everyday.”
Day 30
They begin counting all their money to find out how much they have made so far and
what they can pay o" now. Morgan figures out that all their bills are going to take more
than three months to pay o". “We’re still just getting by,” he says.
“It’s been eightyears since the minimum wage has changed,” Morgan explains.“Even if
you’re among the working poor,even above minimum wage,you’re stilljust barely going
to make it,” Alex says. “We don’t see the people surrounding us, we don’t see the people
struggling to get by right next to us,” Morgan says. “I’ve seen it, I’ve only been doing it a
month, but there’s people who do it their whole lives.”
