Chapter 1 - Introduction
1.0 Research Overview
This research aims to investigate the process of creating and using a video resource to
communicate a new coaching model to coaches within the Gaelic Athletic Association
(GAA). The GAA is a sporting organisation promoting the Irish pastime of Gaelic
games, of which I am a member and employee. Using an Action Research
Methodology, I intend to record and analyse my own creative process; the changes that
occur for me and for those I engage with within my organisation throughout the
production journey for my video artefact are also documented. The video artefact, in
turn, aims to provide a means to support coaches to understand and reflect upon their
own coaching practice.
My professional context as well as my passion for the promotion of Gaelic games and in
particular the development of the role of the coach in Gaelic games have informed the
focus of my research and the content of the video production I am creating. My beliefs
and values, my ontological and epistemological perspective, will guide me to stay true
to what I feel is important as I observe and reflect on each stage of the process.
In particular, I aim to develop a greater understanding of my own creative process, as I
work both independently and in collaboration with colleagues to produce an educational
video resource. I will refer to the term ‘video resource’ as well as ‘video artefact’ and
use these terms interchangeably throughout this study.
To provide a theoretical framework for my research I will consult literature on;
narrative in learning, digital storytelling, instructional design in video production, and
developing a social partnership through a narrative style video. The insights gained
through consultation with this knowledge bank will inform the focus of my questions
and observations at each stage of the process, observations that I will present and
analyse as I document the implementation and impact of my actions in this dissertation.
