Page 15 - Producing a Video to Communicate a New Model of Coaching to GAA Coaches
P. 15
The coach-player relationship and how it impacts on coaching success (Mageau &
10
Vallerand 2003) has also been identified as a key element of the ‘Coach ’ model. The
model has been approved as a key reference in the GAA’s Coaching policy (Appendix
A). The model is represented visually by the logo in Figure 1.1.

Efforts to communicate this new model have to date been limited and the model is yet to
be fully embedded in the GAA Coach Education Programme structure and resources.
Prior to this study the only published resource to inform coaches of the model was a
web page at http://learning.gaa.ie/coach10 on the GAA Learning website, which
includes a short animated video. Feedback on the effectiveness of this video to
communicate the model identified key challenges that need to be addressed.
A Renewed Coach Education Programme
The impetus for the decision to create another video artefact to communicate the model
came from a review of the GAA Coach Education Programme (Appendix B) in 2012,
by Professor Bryan McCullick of the University of Georgia, Atlanta. McCullick
recommended utilisation of ‘less formal and informal’ delivery methods, including
online content delivery, and in particular the use of video-recordings of ‘real’ Coach
Education Educators and Coaches to communicate best practices. These
recommendations form part of a series from the report that have been adopted for
implementation in a renewal of the GAA Coach Programme, which is identified as a
key Strategic Goal for the GAA in its Strategic Plan (GAA 2015, p 11)
