Chapter 2 – Literature Review
2.0 Introduction
The purpose of this literature review is to present a brief overview of the literature to
establish a theoretical framework for my study. The framework will demonstrate an
understanding of the theories and concepts required for the production of an educational
video using a narrative approach.
To achieve this I will:
• provide an overview of key references from the literature on the importance of
narrative in learning, on key aspects of digital storytelling, on principles of
instructional design for educational video, and on developing a social partnership
through a narrative style video
• establish an argument for the production of a video in a narrative style to
communicate a model of coaching
2.1 Basis & Methodology of Review
I am led by my belief in the importance of presenting a meaningful narrative to a
learner that they can engage in and through which they can seek to explore and
develop themselves and their practice. My research is influenced by personal areas of
interest; in particular the importance of narrative and storytelling in learning, visual
media, as well as the use of graphics and symbols in communication.
The literature review is divided into the following key themes:
● Narrative in Learning
● Digital Storytelling
● Instructional Design in Video Production
● Developing a Social Partnership through a Narrative Style Video
