A.H. [Full name undocumented]
Yogyakarta, Java [Indonesia]
circa 1930-1940
Silver from this silversmith occasionally appears in
Western auction houses incorrectly catalogued as Chinese
Export Silver. Mainly a high quality manufacturer of silver
flatware, boxes and jewellery items, this maker operated in
Java during the Dutch administration producing Yogya
Silver using a symmetrical arabesque style sometimes seen
on late 19th century/early 20th century Chinese Export
Silver and Straits Chinese silver
This mark indicates a possible working relationship with Chi
Cheong of Hong Kong. Research is ongoing to determine if this was
simply on a regular or ad hoc supplier basis of Yogya-style silver
being inventoried by Chi Cheong. It is possible, for example, that
Chi Cheong bought jade in Java and had created a working
relationship with AH - although the retention of the 800 mark for a
Hong Kong retail silversmith is somewhat strange.
This mark has been mistakenly identified in the past as AH.BOO - it
is actually a poorly punched 800 silver purity mark in a format that
appears to place it firmly in the realms of Yogya silver.
The mark [above] appears on this “Fu” pin that seems obviously made for the Hong Kong market of Chi Cheong
