Page 289 - Chinese SIlver By Adrien Von Ferscht
P. 289
Interestingly, the thistle motif
appears again on this late 19th
century child’s cutlery set.
What is clear from this
relatively rare silver mark is
the quality is consistently high
and there is an obvious skill in
repoussé, engraving and
applied raised work.
This circa 1860 goblet is displaying Hei Ch’eung Hing’s engraved
decorative treatment to the stem and base which is very similar to
the back of the fork [above].
The cup has a combination of engraved and repoussé work which
is executed in manner that sets it slightly apart from most
contemporary Chinese
silversmiths. The cup also
has a double skinned bowl - a
quality piece. The cup bears
an engraved inscription
dated Canton, 1860.
Another masterful card case,
circa 1880. It is interesting to
note that almost all items
bearing the HCH mark have a
particularly mellow, slightly
grey colour to the silver.
