For a piece of Chinese Export Silver, this is an
extraordinary trophy cup. The treatment of the fruited
garland handles is probably unique in the 155 years of this
entire silver category. Nothing really looks Chinese about
this cup until one looks closer - the fruits on the garlands
are extremely Chinese in every way., yet the garlands have
almost a late 17th/ early 18th century feel to them to the
point where they could even have been inspired by
Grinling Gibbons [see detailing of 17th century Grinling
Gibbons carved wood garland above right and detailing of
Heng Li silver garland left].
