This impressive circa 1860 lidded standing cup
stands on six scrolled leaves. The body is literally
encrusted with a magnificent and highly elaborate
chased scene of the Eight Immortals and other
immortals and minor gods and goddesses paying
obeisance to the chief god in heaven astride a
dragon. The leaf and flower handles, however, are
more European in influence.
The same Hoaching approach of “encrusting” has been applied to this circa 1880 goblet while its base, showing
the exposed roots of the tree that supports the bowl is actually traditionally Chinese and can be seen in work of
many other Chinese silversmiths of the time.
