This Hoaching egg cruet is the only recorded Chinese silver
double egg cruet in the neo-classical style. While egg cruets
were popular in the early 19th century they were mostly made
for four or six people. The original purpose-built storage box
remains with the set.
The ostrich egg cup carrying the Hoaching mark is one of the
more eccentric examples of Chinese silver. Resting in a
reticulated bamboo basket that is supported by a twisted
bamboo form stem that is “planted” in an exposed root system
on its domed base.
