L.S. [SILVERSMITH’S FULL NAME UNDOCUMENTED]
Canton
circa 1880-1925
A relatively rare mark to find and
as yet the full identity of the name
behind the mark is undiscovered.
A circa 1905 silver tyg in true art
nouveau/jugendstil style taking an
unusual form inasmuch as the
bowl is ingeniously suspended
above the domed base that
tantalisingly rises to meet the
bowl but never does.
However, the style of the cup and
the inscription it carries don’t
quite sit comfortably together.
The inscription reads:
Peking Club
1918
Billiard Handicap
Won by
W.Whitton
a clear case of a silver item made
at a time prior to the dedication
since this tag cup can only be art
nouveau period which ended in
1910.
