LI SHENG
Chéngdū, Síchuān Province
circa 1890-1940
Li Sheng is an important silversmith within the family of Chinese Export
Silver inasmuch as items carrying the Li Sheng silver mark so often have a
stylistic quality that sets them apart from the “rest of the family” as it were.
This may be due to the fact that making silver items in Chengdu, almost the
geographic centre of China and a city that had no access to the sea [and
foreign influences] caused this; it is also a city with a 3600 year heritage.
The lotus bud vase [left] does not have any comparable from elsewhere in
China; only its traditional decorative motifs are recognisable.
