Page 623 - Chinese SIlver By Adrien Von Ferscht
P. 623
SAN YANG HE
Beijing
circa 1880-1940
This is a rare mark to find but a silversmith of
extraordinary skill. The level of craftsmanship and
the fact this was a silversmith working in Beijing
indicates this could well have been a master
silversmith originally from the Imperial workshops.
The handles on this vase are formed as conforming
bats with outspread wings which in themselves are
an unusual decorative handle feature for a Chinese
silver piece, albeit the bat was so widely used in
Chinese art to the extent it could be viewed as
being ubiquitous.
The vase is made of heavy gauge silver with a
highly polished finish bearing an engraved
hibiscus flower decorative motif..
As an image this vase presents as a grand
monumental piece; it is in fact a 15cm high,
100gram bud vase, so the high level of detailing
and quality take on a whole new meaning.
